The crime period drama follows the likes of Matthew Shardlake who is sent by Thomas Cromwell to investigate the death of a commissioner in a remote town of Scarnsea.

In case you hadn't already guessed, it's none other than Shardlake.

The series, which boasting a star-studded cast including the likes of Sean Bean, Arthur Hughes, Anthony Boyle and Paul Kaye, just dropped on Disney+ this Wednesday (1 May), and it's clear fans are already going wild for it.

Check out the official trailer here:

One X, formerly Twitter, user revealed: "Excited and terrified in equal measure to start Shardlake.

"The novels are some of the greatest works of fiction ever written and this adaptation has been a long time coming. Thankfully, the reviews appear to be bordering on near-universal acclaim. Starting this weekend."

A second admitted: "I have to say that I am putting Shardlake off at the moment. I love the books very much and am scared witless that Disney+, for all its good intentions, will have made a Horlicks of it."

"Started #Shardlake @Disney. Gripped, both by the pace and period feel, and by the way its handsome hero is actually disabled – a most moving and faithful piece of casting," praised a third.

A fourth chimed in: "Just watched Ep1 and it didn’t disappoint. Arthur Hughes is a brilliant Shardlake. Can’t wait to watch the rest of the series. Bravo everyone."

"The Shardlake show is good! Happy days! It will hopefully fill the void left by Shōgun," gushed a fifth.

Another added: "Really enjoyed Shardlake and devoured it all last night. Very different to the book and better for it."

Some, however, were not as quick to shower the show with praise as others.

One hit out: "Watched the first episode of Shardlake last night. I liked the books, but I’m not sure this is a good adaptation. From the crappy CGI abbey, to the lead having a very 2000s haircut and beard, the production values felt very like a BBC kids show. No comparison to Wolf Hall so far."

"Loved the books," echoed another.

"Not sure about the show tho. Except the cast is good, and Anthony Boyle is fit…"

Reckon you'll be giving it a go?
